Join Cumberland Council as a Highways Team Leader

About the Role

You’ll supervise a team of up to five staff, ensuring high-quality work across tasks such as minor highway construction, patching, drainage works, bridge support, and the installation of highway furniture. You’ll help plan work, organise materials and plant, and drive a culture of safety, performance, and quality on site. The role also includes operating a variety of plant, completing essential paperwork, and supporting winter maintenance when required.

What We’re Looking For

• Full UK driving licence
• Experience in highway maintenance
• Ability to lead, motivate and organise a small team
• Knowledge of highway materials, processes, and safe working practices
• Competent in the use of tools, plant, and equipment
• Strong communication skills and a customer‑focused approach
• Flexibility to work across Cumbria and take part in out‑of‑hours duties

Desirable: HGV/LGV, CSCS, HIAB, NRSWA, plant operator certification, winter maintenance experience, NVQ Level 2 in Highways or Team Leadership.
