Cumberland Council is seeking to appoint two new Members to its Independent Remuneration Panel.
About the OpportunityCumberland Council comprises 46 Councillors who are elected to determine the policies and priorities of a large complex body. Councillors undertake a wide range of roles and receive a basic allowance, and sometimes a special responsibility allowance, in accordance with the Council’s Members’ Allowances Scheme.
Although primarily concerned with determining payments to Councillors, the scheme may also provide for allowances to be paid to a small number of non elected, co-opted members.
In accordance with the legislative requirements, Cumberland Council has established an Independent Remuneration Panel. The Panel has the function of providing the Council with advice on its Members’ Allowances Scheme and the nature and level of allowances to be paid. The Council must have regard to this advice when reviewing or amending its scheme.
Who we’re looking forWe are looking for two members of the public who are able to make informed, impartial contributions to panel meetings and the recommendations to the Council. You should have some understanding of the roles and responsibilities of councillors and the operation of a local authority. Ideally you will also have a general awareness of remuneration levels in the public and private sectors.
The work will entail attending meetings (in person and on Teams) throughout the year together with some telephone and email contact in order to finalise reports.
